The telephone is an indispensable business tool. For many people, it is the first (and sometimes only) contact with the drug store. The seemingly constant ringing of the telephone may be an irritation to the drug store staff because it is an interruption in their work. Unfortunately, this attitude is often communicated to the unsuspecting caller and opportunities for sales are missed. Attitude: Everyone answering the telephone must see opportunity rather than irritation in every call. This is simply an attitude that should become part of store policy and training. Large companies that do much of their business by telephone regularly monitor employee telephone performance to insure standards are being met. A less invasive but still-watchful approach will work well in community drug stores.

Brides-to-be trying on gowns at The Wedding Salon of Manhasset received expert advice from Atlanta-based designer Anne Barge, who was on-site Feb. 12 for her only Long Island trunk show. A creator of old-fashioned gowns with a nod to classic elegance favored by Audrey Hepburn, Barge made recommendations on gowns and alterations to The Wedding Salon clients. Nancy Aucone, who owns The Wedding Salon with business partner Susan Finale, said theres always a lot to learn when a designer visits the shop. We only do customizing changes when a designer is here, Aucone said. When they say it can be done and write the order, and do a sketch - a picture is worth 1,000 words.

Literally and symbolically, Interior Designs is about interior and exterior designs. Its form parallels its content: it is divided into four major sections, each with approximately twenty chapters of between one and four pages. Instead of relying on plot, Jaffe writes short passages to illustrate various aspects of design, primarily the architecture of houses. In these passages the narrator describes all the houses she has lived in, none of which she has occupied for more than three years. In the section entitled The First House, the narrator and her husband, a rabbi, look for a new house. Instead of finding the right house, the right house seems to find them (throughout the novel structural components such as doors and windows are personified). The new house also has light shining from more than one direction, an entry for proper greetings and farewells, and a sense of solidity, all of which make the narrator feel infinite. Upon moving to the house, the narrator considers philosophical questions concerning fate, luck, guilt, and desire. These questions are exemplary of the novels themes–in every chapter of the novel, some aspect of exterior design is portrayed literally to illustrate metaphorically human emotions or philosophical issues. Sometimes the metaphors are a bit too obvious, and occasionally the narrator intrudes to explain them lest they slip past readers. For example, when looking at a house she decides against, she says all except one structural flaw is amendable. The minor flaws in the house are like little and medium-sized mistakes we all make in life–they were not irrevocable. For the most part, however, Jaffe has a wonderfully poetic style; remarkably enough, despite the lack of plot, the novel moves forward at a quick pace. The idea that you cant go home again recurs throughout the novel, but the implication is interestingly reversed, suggesting that to return to an earlier phase in ones fife would be to backslide. Textual and symbolic circular patterns develop in the novel that integrate the chapters with the text as a whole and that unite individuals with others and in a spiritual sense with the universe. Entertaining, witty, and full of philosophical insights, Interior Designs explores ways to find and maintain personal and spiritual peace.

How much individual room and group business did you lose today because of poor telephone handling skills at your property? Its amazing that throughout the years we havent done more to correct the way we handle telephone communications so that we can do more business. Even with all the new technologies available, we arent doing the job properly. We misuse and abuse the new stuff. How the telephone call is handled in every department of our properties is the key to doing more business. The hospitality industry is being challenged. Its a lot more difficult to get that individual customer or group than it was during the eight-year period through 2000. It just seems so unbelievable that with all the time, effort and resources we spend on marketing and sales that we wouldnt take great care in how we respond to telephone inquiries when someone wants to do business with us.

DALLAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–March 25, 1996–Northern Telecom (Nortel), one of the worlds most broadly diversified developers of communication products, and Superscape, the leading provider of software tools for creating interactive three-dimensional virtual worlds on personal computers, have announced the availability of Nortels new training software for telephone console attendants. The major advantages of virtual reality training already have been proven, said Nortels Sue Wade, vice president, Multimedia Communication Systems Product Training and Documentation. Weve chosen Superscapes PC-based technology because it is perfect for a wide variety of broad user applications, which is what the majority of training needs are. Almost every business is equipped with PCs, so it is easy for people to self-train or take a refresher session at their own pace, whenever they like, at no cost to the company beyond the initial CD-ROM software purchase.Virtual reality software delivers real benefits to businesses, said Rob Lowe, president and CEO, Superscape Inc. New attendants who are training on this Nortel virtual reality application need no helmets or glasses to experience exactly the same environment they will encounter when they move to the real console. Line designators light up. Callers talk to the attendants, requesting information or to be connected to various people. Theres even a virtual window over the console where virtual traffic whizzes by, to help them hone their concentration skills.
Do you know how much business you lost today because of how your phone was answered (or not answered)? We know all this happens all too often because at many of my sales workshops, we do some tele-testing. We make calls to various competitors of the properties represented in our audience. We try to book a room for overnight, or a wedding reception, a meeting, etc. The participants get to hear the conversation via speaker phone. More than 90 percent of the inquiries we make, even if we get to talk to a real live person, are handled in a most unprofessional and unfriendly manner. Often, when we finally get connected to someone in reservations, sales or catering, he or she does a poor job in asking the right questions. Seems to me that if a caller is a qualified prospect, someone should be asking for a name and telephone number, at least. It looks like nobody gets any telephone training.

Dear Abby: “Bride-to-Be” asked if it was common or proper to wear her wedding gown to the airport or on a plane. You advised her that it was impractical, but theres no law against it. By that, I assume your intention was to say that no rule of etiquette specifically forbids it, rather than a criminal statute. Dear Jessica: Most of my readers who chose to comment on that letter agreed I was right to discourage the bride-to-be. But not all of them did. Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

Some compare todays coastal housing market, where prices increased the most, to the investment craze that led to the technology stock crash a few years ago. Home prices in some regions have more than doubled in the past five years, leading to concerns that the speculative bubble might burst. There have also been record levels of conversion of apartments into condominiums in many areas of the country as demand for homeownership has also led to increased demand for condominiums. Investors can earn a greater profit by selling apartments as condos rather than renting apartments. In markets like Miami, where the condo market has been particularly hot, some units have even changed hands the same day as speculators have been buying many of the condos. The bad news for homeowners in Indiana is that they have not seen their home values rise like many other areas of the country. The Indianapolis areas home prices grew at nearly the slowest pace of the top fifty markets, or 19 percent during the past five years. Homeowners in the Boston and San Diego areas saw their homes appreciate more than 75 percent during the same period. The good news is what has not gone up will probably not go down. That is, home prices in Indiana are not likely to fall with a possible drop in prices in those areas of the country that may be experiencing a bubble. So there is less risk associated with purchasing a home in Indiana compared to many other areas of the country. This also makes homes in Indiana relatively affordable compared to many other areas.

PHOENIX — Plenty of mystique surrounds the phrase “pitchers and catchers report.” But on a team like the Oakland Athletics, where there arent any superstars making grand entrances or players denying what Jose Canseco wrote about them in his book, the day is mostly about shoes. Showing off new shoes. Trying on new shoes. Complaining the wrong shoes arrived. So it went on an overcast Saturday morning with light rain for the As at their Papago Park facility, where just as many position players have already arrived as pitchers and catchers.
More complex designs exist, including ones where the strap is drawn across the top of the shoe through a metal loop and then pulled back on itself. This provides a more even force on both sides of the shoe, but the metal loop digs into the wearers feet when the shoe bends. Mizuno, of Osaka, Japan, has produced shoes that feature sets of straps, arranged down both sides of each shoe. The larger of the two straps features a hole allowing a smaller, opposing strap to pass through, ensuring both sides are pulled tight. European patent application: 1283018

I spent hours reading such magazines as Wired and MacWorld, surfing the Internet, and otherwise avoiding putting words on paper. My purpose in putting these videos on my site is to capture the subtleties of expert practice. To that end, I have included study questions that I hope will focus attention on the intricate ways master teachers practice their craft. Incidentally, my wife Sharon is the teacher in the first video, and she doesnt like my calling the video clip Shared Reading. The term seemed appropriate when the clip was recorded during the spring of 1996, but today I guess people refer to this kind of activity as buddy reading.

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Pamida Holdings Corp. will offer footwear from Shoe Sourcing Inc. in its stores this summer under an exclusive merchandising agreement with that division of Payless ShoeSource Inc. While Payless ShoeSource operates the shoe departments in 396 ShopKo stores as part of an alliance that was reached two years ago between the companies, the agreement between Pamida and Shoe Sourcing allows the Omaha, Neb.-based division to operate its own shoe departments with merchandise received from Shoe Sourcing.

It looks like nobody gets any telephone training.

laser liposuction new york

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. — A newly approved low-level laser has been shown to disrupt fat cell membranes, facilitating fat extraction during liposuction. A comparison of the effects of the laser on fat cells with and without tumescent anesthesia revealed that the tumescent solution acts as a magnifier, literally amplifying the energy used and decreasing the amount of time required to liquefy the fat by 2-3 minutes, said Dr. Dedo of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Low-level-laser-assisted liposuction was developed by Dr. Rodrigo Neira of Cali, Colombia, who introduced it last year and has used the 635-nm diode laser on more than 600 patients.
Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in March 2004, the system consists of a laser massage and cooling device for minimizing cellulite and smoothing and tightening the skin.I was skeptical at first, said Sireci, 31, who opened East Hampton Electrolysis in November 2004. But after hearing doctors discuss the treatment, she changed her mind. The handheld laser massage device, the size of a cell phone, claims to loosen up fat and increase circulation, which helps improve the skins appearance. The cooling mechanism protects the skin so that treatment is not painful. Treatment is completed after a series of 10 to 15 sessions. In addition, there is a treatment for the face, a 48-hour facelift that helps refresh facial tissue, so that the skin takes on a glow, Sireci said. You see the results right away.By mid-November of this year, Sireci had completed the necessary training and began treating clients. To date, she has about 35 clients, 10 of whom she treats with the LaserDermology system. But the rest of her clients are there for permanent hair removal through electrolysis, an FDA approved method that destroys the hair root at the bottom of the follicle. Having undergone electrolysis years ago, Sireci says she was interested in learning more about the process. So for one month she attended The Berkowits School of Electrolysis in Forest Hills, Queens for training. The treatment brings emotional healing for those seeking it, Sireci said. Some people have so much excess hair they dont want to leave their house, Sireci said. Or, theyll cover their lip when kissing people. Its a very common problem. The body, Sireci said, has thousands of dormant hair follicles that become active through puberty, pregnancy and menopause as well as through certain medications. As for those clients who find electrolysis painful, Sireci recommends topical ointments that take the edge off.Sireci used her personal savings to open her facility, including thousands for a treatment table. She is leasing the LaserDermology machine.Cellulite treatment packages run from $1,400 to $2,100; and sessions for the face cost $200 each. Electrolysis runs from $30 for 15 minutes to $85 for 45 minutes. She is also considering offering vein removal, sunless tanning and eyelash tinting. And she would like to hire someone to answer the phone. Right now its just me, she said. I wear many hats.

“There are [more than] 30 million Americans who have no health insurance and another 20 million who have inadequate health insurance,” says Rep. Louis Stokes (D0Ohio), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus Health Brain Trust. “It is mandatory that we begin to try and give Americans–particularly minorities–adequate health care as a right.” The Bush plan would give people not covered by Medicaid tax credits, and families making less than $80,000 a year tax deductions to pay for medical costs. He would also pass laws to ensure that even chronically ill patients could receive health insurance. The plan has received a cool reception on Capitol Hill, and alternate proposals, including a full-scale, government-paid national health insurance plan, are under development. But what does America really want for its health care system? The views are many.
FOR THE uninitiated, medical and health insurance is a relatively new class of insurance in Malaysia compared to motor, fire or personal accident insurance. A lot has been written about it, but there continues to be confusion over what health insurance really is.

Part II, explanatory economics, represents the bulk of the book. The economics of demand, price elasticity, risk aversion, and the effect of insurance on the demand for medical services are explained clearly and well. Behavior of suppliers in the medical care market is reviewed, with attention given to differences in for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. A solid explanation of competitive markets allows discussion of timely issues such as the limits of applicability of the competitive model to the medical care market, price and nonprice competition, and market power of providers, purchasers, and patients. Outside readings on current managed competition proposals would augment the textbook discussion well.A short section on the economic effects of information asymmetries in the medical care and health insurance market introduces the concepts of supplier induced demand and adverse selection. Both discussions are short, but the portion on adverse selection especially needs expansion. More rigor, explanatory graphs, and a more extensive bibliography would make the adverse selection concept more useful. This topic is critical to a sound understanding of the functioning of medical expense insurance. The final section deals with value judgments and evaluative economics. The nontechnical explanation of efficiency versus fairness criteria for evaluating medical care policy is somewhat cursory. More technical material is needed to improve the precision of this discussion. However, even without any additions, the text provides a general background on issues of access to medical care, affordability, and quality of care. The difficulty of making allocation decisions given scarce resources is clearly laid out and opens the way for a discussion of policy alternatives.
Developing a “Culture of Safety” A year ago we wrote about the complex process involved in identifying, categorizing, and assessing medical error in health care in the United States (”Assessing Medical Error in Health Care,” Health Progress, November– December 2001, pp. 14-17). Lasar v. Ford Motor Co., - F. Supp. 2d -, No. CV 99-177-M-WNM, 2003 WL 29882 (D. Mont. Jan. 2, 2003). A U.S. district court granted a mistrial and imposed sanctions against a defense attorney who used his opening statement to suggest that plaintiff might have been intoxicated at the time of his automobile accident. In his opening statement, defendants lawyer told the jury that plaintiff and friends “spent the day playing pool, visiting some local establishments,” and that plaintiff “made the decision to drive himself home.” Plaintiff moved for a mistrial, arguing that defense counsel was suggesting that plaintiffs injury was caused by alcohol use.
WORKPLACE accidents will usually occur at the most inopportune time. Regardless of the cause of an accident, it is only a matter of time before the company, its insurer and professional accident investigators will be trying to sort out the facts in order to assess financial damages and determine the responsibility for the accident. However, in many cases risk managers do not take the appropriate steps to secure and protect the evidence that is available at the accident scene. Consequently, this accident-related evidence, which constitutes the only proof as to how the accident actually occurred, is often lost, thereby preventing its use in case exposure evaluation, negotiation settlement or litigation. As a result, risk managers must implement measures to ensure that a rapid, competent on-site accident investigation is conducted that secures the site and preserves important physical evidence. This type of approach, known as a fast response accident investigation, will optimize the investigations results and save key evidence, thereby resulting in the lowest possible settlement or litigation costs.

* Exercise may be the stepping stone to fewer gallbladder surgeries. Women exercising just 30 minutes a day five times a week cut their risk by 20 percent, while physically active middle-aged men sliced their risk by almost 50 percent. Results of the ongoing Nurses Health Study conducted at Harvard were first published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The exercise, which may improve body fat, insulin levels and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, could help cut the more than 800,000 hospitalizations related to gallbladder surgery that occur in the United States each year, states Consumer Reports on Health. * Theres a rat in my beer! A recent study at the University of Manitoba, Canada, showed that damaged livers in rats were repaired faster with light alcohol consumption than with no alcohol consumption, while heavy alcohol consumption was bad news. The trial studied the effect of light, moderate and heavy doses of alcohol in rats with partially removed livers. Researchers believe that light consumption of ethanol helps production of a repair-promoting gene. Animals receiving heavy doses of alcohol showed retardation of hepatic repair and those given moderate amounts of alcohol showed no extraordinary improvement reports Family Practice News. * Its all in the family. A recent study indicates that persons from larger families are at a greater risk of developing Alzheimers disease. According to statistics, the risk that an individual will have the disease increases by 8 percent for each additional sibling in a family and is 39 percent greater for those with five or more siblings than in those with less than five siblings. The report, first published in Neurology, suggests that the areas of the brain affected by the disease correspond with those that take the greatest amount of time to mature during child and teen years, and thats why childhood factors play a role in development of the disease.
